Five days is a great length for a first taste of Switzerland — long enough for the mountains, short enough that you don’t want to waste hours backtracking. This itinerary stays in the compact central belt (Lucerne and the Jungfrau region) so you spend your time on views, not connections.

It’s built for trains and covered by a Swiss Travel Pass; price it against a Half Fare Card since five days is where the two get close.

Day 1 — Arrive, on to Lucerne

Land in Zurich and take the 45-minute train straight to Lucerne. Settle in and walk the Chapel Bridge and lakefront in the evening.

Day 2 — Lucerne and its mountain

Full day in Lucerne: old town in the morning, then up Rigi or Pilatus in the afternoon for your first Alpine panorama. A lake cruise is included with the pass.

Day 3 — The scenic run to Interlaken

Ride the Luzern–Interlaken Express (about 2 hours) over the Brünig Pass. Afternoon in Interlaken: the Höheweg promenade and the view from Harder Kulm.

Day 4 — Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen

Your mountain day in the Jungfrau region. Grindelwald–First for the cliff walk and easy hikes, or the Lauterbrunnen valley and Mürren for sheer drama. Save Jungfraujoch for a longer trip unless the weather is perfect.

Day 5 — Slow morning, then home

A final lake or village morning, then train back to Zurich (about 2 hours) for your flight. Fly out of Zurich to avoid a cross-country transfer.

Make it longer

Have a week? The 7-day itinerary adds Zermatt and the Matterhorn to this exact route.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough to see Switzerland?

Five days is enough to enjoy central Switzerland and the Jungfrau Alps well: Lucerne, Interlaken and the mountain villages. It is not enough to also reach Zermatt or Ticino without spending most of your time on trains, so this itinerary keeps distances short.

Should I add Zermatt to a 5-day trip?

Only if the Matterhorn is a must-see for you — it adds significant train time. For five days, most first-timers get more out of going deeper into the Jungfrau region than adding a second mountain area.
